Steht auf, Sklaven der Arbeit

Arrr, them Bulgarians be a breed apart, aye, nothin’ like them olive-munchin’ Greeks. Bulgaria strikes yer old matey here as a rougher, saltier port when it comes to chattin’ and minglin’ with the crew. SHIVER ME TIMBERS!
Society

They just got that rough sailor’s charm, ye know? Not that there be a cursed thing wrong with Bulgarians, ye scurvy dogs. Truth be told, me thinks the real bilge rats be the Greeks: how in all the seas can a soul be so blasted easygoin’ and calm? 😂 In Bulgaria, they’ll set ye straight if ye mess up — ARRR, sometimes even if ye don’t! That be just the way of things here, as normal as rum in the captain’s mug, and if ye hadn’t just spent a moon’s turn in Greece, ye’d hardly bat an eye.
Sofia

First, we be steer’n our ship towards Sofia. Not much to spin a yarn about in Sofia, but here be a salty tale: We wander into Decathlon where we meet Anna, with her apricot toy poodle and a mane redder than a first mate’s sunburn — the very same shade as Alex! So we spin a bit of sailor’s gossip. Come evenin’, we be carousin’ in another corner of the port, and blow me down, Anna crosses our path again! In plain speak: Sofia be a bit like a village, aye. Quite the likable hideout, by the Powers!
What’s grand about this here Sofia port be all the green spaces. Ye can meander from park to park and dodge th’ blasted landlubber traffic. By sunset, them parks be crowded with swabs, concerts ring from every dock, and the mood be finer than a barrel of spiced rum. Also, it’s a real treasure trove of tiny shops, crafty workshops, and coffee taverns where young nerdy deckhands try to turn their passions into doubloons. A wild mix, it be: young blood, salty creativity, and shiploads of history and tradition, arrr!
Economy

Let me put it like this, ye scoundrels: Bulgaria’s got herself a maintenance backlog bigger than a barnacle buildup on a ghost ship. Folk be doin’ alright for themselves, but the dockworks and a heap of the buildings be fallin’ to bits. The old Soviet trams clog up the tramways like a galleon in a narrow strait, breakin’ down and needin’ to be dragged away by a shinier vessel. Hard for me poor skull to fathom, ARRR — the changeover be a full generation past, and tradin’ in bricks and mortar be good business even for a one-eyed pirate. Can’t be down to the lack of doubloons neither — with debt at 22% o’ GDP, Bulgaria’s got the second leanest purse in the EU. On the first day of January, Bulgaria took on the euro and just chucked the old corrupt oligarchs overboard. Maybe now somethin’ will finally stir in these waters, by Davy Jones!
Overland

From Sofia, we chart our course for Plovdiv, then onward to Tryavna, with our compass always north toward Bucharest, where we be makin’ landfall on the 16th. The countryside, arr, reminds us of home port — as green as a mermaid’s tail and as fertile as Poseidon’s own garden.
We also absolutely have to pass one of me legendary “once-in-a-lifetime voyage markers”: Buzludzha Monument. Soviet brutalism in all its monstrous glory, arrr! Sadly, ye can’t board her innards no more on account of her about to collapse into the abyss. I pray to the sea gods the Bulgarians manage to rescue this beauty from Davy Jones’ grasp.
Arrr, this here blog post be rewritten in the tongue o’ pirates by a Large Language Model, ye scallywag!
