Ciao-Sescu
Benno
Arrrigh’, ye scurvy dogs! Our next cursed port o’ call on th’ way back to home waters be ROMANIA, a land wit’ a shadow hangin’ o’er it darker than th’ bilge o’ me ship! Arrr! Her reputation stinks worse than three-week-old fish in July, and yet me curiosity gnaws at me bones to see what be changed since me last drunken stumble through these lands.
Palace o’ Parliament

Blimey! On me “get shipwrecked here before death claims me” list sits th’ Palace o’ Parliament in Bucharest. Th’ blasted thing be th’ heaviest pile o’ rocks on th’ seven seas and the second biggest den o’ government pirates anywhere, with only th’ Pentagon stretchin’ its shadow longer. ARRR! ‘Tis a monstrous sight, aye. In days o’ yore, palaces be built fer gods and kings, but now? Just glorified hideouts fer paper-pushers and coin-counters.
Shiver me timbers, why would a place like Romania need such a beast? Ha! They don’t, ye fools! But once upon a black night, Romania sailed under a red commie flag, steered by th’ tyrant Nicolae Ceaușescu and his harpy, Elena. Ceaușescu, a right madman with a rage bigger than a hurricane, wanted to plant his boots in a palace fit fer his giant, inflated ego and th’ supposed might o’ th’ Romanian crew. So what did he do? He razed a whole quarter, bootin’ out 50,000 poor souls like barnacles off me hull.
To be fair, and I hate to admit this: th’ mad dog Ceaușescu did have a bit o’ taste. Some parts o’ th’ palace would knock yer eyepatch clean off. Sure, it’s fancier than a Spanish galleon, but it ain’t gaudy like a cheap barmaid’s necklace. The Art Deco concert hall makes me weep salty tears. ARRR! Masters of their craft, these scallywags.
Buildin’ such a monstrosity must’ve swallowed enough doubloons to sink th’ treasury. But as ye’d expect, the tale didn’t end well fer the Ceaușescus. Them two met their fate at the end o’ a show trial and a musket volley fer th’ whole world to see, right there on th’ magic box! That were 1989, and I were a sprat o’ ten summers then, still got the memory hangin’ in me skull like an albatross. At school we made jests o’ “Ciao-Sescu” and me mum and pa were shakin’ harder than a dinghy in a gale. Not ‘cause they liked the old sea-devil—none shed a tear at his doom—but them were mad days with the Warsaw Pact scuttling and black-flag executions. Communism gutted these lands, from stem to stern. Wrecked ‘em in parley, coin, and soul. Millions to Davy Jones. Even after 35 orbits round th’ sun, th’ scars are open, bleeding, and the pain’s real as a cutlass to the gut.
Politics

Thar be more turmoil in th’ politics than barnacles on me keel! And ye don’t just read it in th’ newspapers fit fer lining th’ poop deck—ye feel it in th’ marrow o’ th’ folks. In Bucharest we cross cutlasses with Bogdan—an old chum Alex met while training felines in Athens. Bogdan be a right miserable mate, and though he sails with some coin in his pouch, ye feel th’ salt in his wounds. Every matey’s crooked or lazy, and with a heap o’ luck, maybe his grandkids’ll live to see the blasted highway built, ‘cause th’ doubloons vanish faster than grog at sundown. Bogdan also dishes about th’ battered buildings in the plummest spots: th’ commies expropriated every last plank, and now not a soul can tell what belongs to whom or who’s meant to swab the deck. Add to that, the shacks be packed with gypsies (his word, not mine!) and the state shields ‘em like treasure. Owners be left freezing in the crow’s nest. With luck, another quake’ll topple the rotten mess and give ‘em a chance to rebuild. If a horde o’ gypsies gets sent to the abyss in the process? No one’s shedding tears, it seems.
It be pure chaos, lads and lasses! State can’t even collect booty. More inflation than a windbag politician—over five percent! And the budget be more empty than me rum barrel—worst in the EU! Lemme try to haul in what I’ve gathered with me one eye.
After a far-right Kremlin parrot snagged th’ first round o’ votes, th’ tired old parties lashed their ships together in a grand coalition. But they hate each other more than rival pirates after a mutiny. Every tiny reform walks the plank in parliament. The government be about as useful as a compass made o’ cheese. Every dog looks after his own stash. Inevitably, the left hooks arms with the far right, though they swore they’d never, and together send the government to the sharks. Th’ president loses his last drop o’ patience, names a new captain without askin’, riskin’ a mutiny in his own ranks.
That’s democracy, me hearties: blades drawn, barrels empty, and no one steerin’ the ship! Outside hands keep meddlin’ too, conjuring wild tales on the wind—Russia, MAGA loons like that scurvy Bannon, and even the EU’s stickin’ its nose in. Then, to spice it all up, Russian and Ukrainian sky-mines smack into the NATO fleet, spreadin’ panic like plague rats. Folk be weary. Our guide on the Bucharest walking tour reckons civil war’s set to explode any day now, says she’s ready to die on the front line. She’s also seein’ a mind-doctor, so take her words like salt in grog.
Transfăgărășan

Next up, crossbones on me bucket list: Transfăgărășan! This snaky road runs bold through th’ Carpathians. Jeremy Clarkson himself called it th’ world’s most beautiful highway, arr! But when it comes to mountain paths, we Swiss swabs don’t scare easy, nor swoon much. Still, this 150-klick stretch be a beauty to make Neptune blush, and there’s one thing ye won’t find in th’ Alps: great brown bears loungin’ by th’ roadside, watchin’ passing landlubbers like they’re performin’ tricks for coins. We spent a night up on the pass, celebrated Charly’s fifth spin round the sun, and dined like royalty—finer than hardtack, believe it or not.
Dracula

Next day we careen down th’ Transfăgărășan into Sibiu, heart o’ Transylvania, where we drop anchor fer two nights. Here, th’ political squabbles of Bucharest be just a distant storm. Th’ city shines like fresh brass in th’ sun, not a rotten shack to be seen, and the folk act like the annual theater festival be the second coming of Blackbeard. It’s one of the world’s largest, and for two decades the old town’s been chasin’ UNESCO treasure, but some infernal hold-up keeps it out o’ their reach. By thunder, I’ve seen sinkholes with th’ title.
We set sail for Timișoara next, burning up one last night in Romania before pointing our bows toward Budapest, where the flaming breath of a heatwave we’d dodged finally roasts our hides.
Romania Recap

Blimey, did we enjoy our spell in Romania! Th’ place be a swirling pot o’ intrigue and fun, with people chipper as dolphins and nosy as parrots. Twenty years back, I thought Romania’d be a battered old hulk, but she’s a right modern vessel these days—flashy horseless carriages and hipster grog shops as far as the spyglass sees. Just another corner of Europe, arrr!
Arrr, this here blog post be rewritten in the tongue o’ pirates by a Large Language Model, ye scallywag!
