Imagine your very first driving lesson, but your car is 12 meters long, weighs 10 tons, and you’re driving on sheet ice with worn-out summer tires. That’s more or less what steering a cat is like.

Catamarans have two hulls connected by a structure. That gives them much more space than monohulls at the same length.

We actually came here to sail, but in the first week we get hit by the Bora. This gives us—and especially Charly—the chance to just settle in.

So that Alex and I can gain experience with different yachts, we decided to charter. Chartering basically means: we rent a yacht, much like you would rent a car.

After my skipper training course, Alexandra and I do a quick handover in Rijeka. This week it’s Alexandra’s turn to take her ASA 101, 103, and 104 courses, while I get to relax and look after the dog.

Although I passed the SKS exam, I still didn’t feel confident enough to skipper a yacht on my own. That’s why I signed up for the skipper training offered by JoJo.

When we first came up with the idea of sailing around the world, there was really only one big problem: we don’t actually know how to sail. That kind of thing makes me nervous, but Alex reassures me: we have all the time in the world to learn, and that’s exactly what we’re planning to do in 2026.

There are people who just buy a yacht and set sail without a clue. You can totally do that, and there’s nothing wrong with it—but we’re way too uptight for that.

My dream is to embark on a journey across the globe in a camper, while my wife dreams of sailing around the world. So, let’s delve into the world of sailing.
